St. Louis Remodeler Constructs Two-Story Addition, Lower-Level Refinish for Eureka Family
Transforming your existing house into your dream home can be a daunting process without the right St. Louis remodeling company. This was the case for the Beckerle Family of Eureka, Mo., who hired Stockell Custom Homes & Construction after a less-than-stellar experience with a previous contractor.
When Don and Sherry Beckerle were ready to build an addition on to their home, they knew how critical it was to hire a trustworthy company to complete the construction.
“We had a bad experience with the original contractor who built our home, so it was important to us that we work with a builder we could trust when we decided to remodel,” Sherry said.
The Beckerle’s researched potential builders and St. Louis remodeling companies carefully. Stockell Construction had a good reputation, so the Beckerle’s approached Don Stockell and his team.
“We chose Don and his team because we heard that Stockell Homes does a great job and were dependable,” she said.
The Beckerle’s hired Stockell Homes to construct a large two-story addition, finish the lower level and build a screened-in porch to their home. Stockell also rebuilt the front elevation, replaced the front porch and front door, added dormers to the roof, as well as trim and shutters to all windows.
The Solution: Quality & Integrity
The Beckerles were impressed not only with the quality of work the Stockell Team delivered, but also the staff’s integrity, consistency and open communication.
“It’s evident that Don and his team takes pride in their work. We appreciated how approachable they were whenever we had questions or needed anything. Also, Don was there by 7 a.m. each day to tell us what to expect and go over everything,” Sherry said.
“It was a drastic difference from our other experience where the contractor makes you pull your hair out and makes the experience miserable. With Don, you get what you are promised, complete with professionalism and excellent communication throughout the process,” she said.
Building a Two-Story Addition
“It was a pleasure working with the Beckerles and helping them improve and expand their home,” Don Stockell said. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the Beckerles and their neighbors, especially regarding the two-story addition. We are committed to providing on-time and on-budget construction.”
The two-story structure was built onto the left side of the home. The addition allowed the Beckerles to expand the laundry and mudroom on the first floor, and add an exercise room and larger walk-in closets off the master suite on the second floor.
Bringing Comfort & Relaxation
Stockell Homes transformed the Beckerle’s lower level into the ideal entertainment environment with a home theater, billiards room and custom wet bar.
Another perfect spot for entertaining and relaxation is the Beckerle’s new sun room. The Stockell Team constructed it by adding a screened-in porch to the back of the home, and suggested the placement of a hot tub.
The Beckerles are pleased with their home’s new look and features.
“Stockell Homes did a great job,” Sherry said. “We’d hire Don again in a heartbeat and have already recommended him to other people. Someone with his integrity and work ethic is hard to come by

Leading St. Louis Builder Donates Labor and Certification Costs for Veteran’s New Home
ST. LOUIS, MO. — For owners Jeremiah and Kristy DeGuire of Eureka, Mo., building their dream home included special needs and a concern for the environment. Their new 3,470-square foot home in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood is not only compliant with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) but also Energy Star-certified.
St. Louis builder Stockell Custom Homes & Construction worked with the DeGuires to specially craft a custom home to accommodate Jeremiah DeGuire, a disabled veteran who relies on a wheelchair. The new home includes low thresholds, three-foot wide entries and doors, a step-free main level, elevator, accessible master bath and roll under kitchen counters and cooktop.
Sustainable, energy-efficient construction and indoor air quality were also key elements of the owners’ dream for their home. As a landscape architect and business owner specializing in sustainable design, Kristy DeGuire shares a similar commitment to environmentally friendly construction practices and resources as the Stockell team.
“My business is focused on the idea that great landscapes nourish, restore and connect, so it was very important that we care for the environment in the design and construction of our home,” said Kristy, president of DG2 Design.
Accordingly, the home is equipped with a custom-built, ground source geo-thermal system, fresh water humidifier, high-efficiency air cleaner and specialty electrical, plumbing, caulking and insulation.
Besides providing a more comfortable and healthier living environment, these Energy Star features are also saving the couple an estimated $2,362.00 per year in energy costs and earning them the federal builder tax credit.
As a way of thanking DeGuire for his military service, Stockell Custom Homes covered the cost of the certifications to keep the home on budget. The Stockell team partnered with Welsch Heating & Cooling Company for HVAC and both companies donated a portion of the labor. In addition, the equipment manufacturer, GeoComfort, provided the a significant discount for the family.
“The construction of the DeGuire’s new custom home included a lot of accessible features that will significantly improve Jeremiah’s mobility in his daily life,” said Stockell. “When we needed to stretch the budget to finalize the Energy-Star upgrades and certifications, many talented people stepped up to give something back to this family who has served our country and sacrificed so much. It’s been gratifying to be a part of building this home.”
The couple is satisfied with the end result.
“My husband and I hired Stockell Custom Homes to build our family’s custom energy-efficient and wheelchair-accessible home,” said Kristy DeGuire. “Our new home has the latest Energy Star building techniques, is ADA-compliant and on budget. Furthermore, our home achieved one of the lowest HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Index scores in the St. Louis region over the last 10 years. We are grateful and happy that we trusted Stockell to build our new home.”

Benefits of High Performance, Energy-Efficient Building
You’ll find that “going green” is more affordable today than even a few years ago. This is thanks to advancements in energy-efficient building technology and techniques. Because green home materials and products are more standard, they’re also less expensive and easier to obtain.
Depending on your “shade” of green home, you can benefit from:
- Increased energy and water efficiency
- Lower utility bills and other utility company incentives
- Healthier indoor air quality
- Tax rebates
- Lower interest rates on “green” home mortgages
- Higher resale value
- Less maintenance and longer lasting homes due to higher quality building materials and processes

Bringing the Barn Door Inside
Whether building a new custom home, remodeling an existing home, or just making a few updates, one design trend we are excited about is sliding barn door style hardware. This look comes in contemporary, industrial, and rustic designs, and can fit beautifully into any kind of decor scheme.
But, are there any real advantages to a sliding door? Yes! Two of the greatest reasons to jump on this trend are for accessibility and saving floor space. A sliding door makes it easier for persons using assistive devices to navigate a space. The sliding door allows them to move straight through an entry. This means no more maneuvering around a classic hinged door, which can be challenging in a tight space like a bathroom. The second reason to consider sliding door hardware is to save valuable floor space in your home. Without the need to allow for the swing space of a traditional hinged door, you are able to utilize more of your own home. As a bonus, the clean lines and look of sliding door hardware can give any space a warm but polished feel.
At Stockell Custom Homes, we have been fortunate enough to use the sliding door trend in two projects this summer. We were thrilled to be able to give two different clients a unique look without sacrificing their own personal style preferences.
What are your thoughts on the sliding barn door trend? Do you think it’s here to stay? We believe it will stand the test of time. The sliding door comes in a vast array of hardware colors and styles and also an abundance of door styles. Besides that, these doors are functional and save space! So, if you’re looking for a fresh way to update your living space, we think that a sliding barn door is the way to go!
Before and After Deck Remodel Makes a Statement
A recent St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles Magazine article featured a stunning deck remodel by Stockell Custom Homes & Construction. In the article, the homeowner talks about how much she enjoys the new deck and screened-in porch completed by Stockell.
But don’t let the seamless look of the remodel fool you. Stockell and his team worked through several obstacles to make the dream deck a reality. Stockell says they ran into setbacks while working to gain approval from the city and homeowners’ association for their initial project designs. With each complication, it was back to the drawing board for the team. It was critical to keep the homeowner’s input and budget a priority as they created each new rendition. “We must have done at least four different project renditions before we could finally begin,” commented Stockell.
The team at Stockell is proud to have constructed a more functional and attractive outdoor living space for the homeowner. They feel honored to have this project highlighted. The article can be found in the Before & After section of the the June/July 2017 Outdoor Issue of St. Louis Homes + Lifestyles.
