St. Louis Remodeler Constructs Two-Story Addition, Lower-Level Refinish for Eureka Family

Transforming your existing house into your dream home can be a daunting process without the right St. Louis remodeling company. This was the case for the Beckerle Family of Eureka, Mo., who hired Stockell Custom Homes & Construction after a less-than-stellar experience with a previous contractor.

The Challenge

When Don and Sherry Beckerle were ready to build an addition on to their home, they knew how critical it was to hire a trustworthy company to complete the construction.

“We had a bad experience with the original contractor who built our home, so it was important to us that we work with a builder we could trust when we decided to remodel,” Sherry said.

The Beckerle’s researched potential builders and St. Louis remodeling companies carefully. Stockell Construction had a good reputation, so the Beckerle’s approached Don Stockell and his team.

“We chose Don and his team because we heard that Stockell Homes does a great job and were dependable,” she said.

The Beckerle’s hired Stockell Homes to construct a large two-story addition, finish the lower level and build a screened-in porch to their home. Stockell also rebuilt the front elevation, replaced the front porch and front door, added dormers to the roof, as well as trim and shutters to all windows.

The Solution: Quality & Integrity

The Beckerles were impressed not only with the quality of work the Stockell Team delivered, but also the staff’s integrity, consistency and open communication.

“It’s evident that Don and his team takes pride in their work. We appreciated how approachable they were whenever we had questions or needed anything. Also, Don was there by 7 a.m. each day to tell us what to expect and go over everything,” Sherry said.

“It was a drastic difference from our other experience where the contractor makes you pull your hair out and makes the experience miserable. With Don, you get what you are promised, complete with professionalism and excellent communication throughout the process,” she said.

Building a Two-Story Addition

“It was a pleasure working with the Beckerles and helping them improve and expand their home,” Don Stockell said. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the Beckerles and their neighbors, especially regarding the two-story addition. We are committed to providing on-time and on-budget construction.”

The two-story structure was built onto the left side of the home. The addition allowed the Beckerles to expand the laundry and mudroom on the first floor, and add an exercise room and larger walk-in closets off the master suite on the second floor.

Bringing Comfort & Relaxation

Stockell Homes transformed the Beckerle’s lower level into the ideal entertainment environment with a home theater, billiards room and custom wet bar.

Another perfect spot for entertaining and relaxation is the Beckerle’s new sun room. The Stockell Team constructed it by adding a screened-in porch to the back of the home, and suggested the placement of a hot tub.

The Result

The Beckerles are pleased with their home’s new look and features.

“Stockell Homes did a great job,” Sherry said. “We’d hire Don again in a heartbeat and have already recommended him to other people. Someone with his integrity and work ethic is hard to come by

What does “Certified Green” Mean?

green-buildingBuilding a new green home is easier than ever. “Building green” simply means putting together a home with minimal environmental impact and energy-saving features.

Here’s a look at three organizations that certify green homes:

NAHB

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) launched its National Green Building Program in 2008. The program is an education, verification and certification initiative for builders located anywhere in the U.S.

A scoring tool at www.nahbgreen.org takes homebuilders through several green categories: water, energy and resource efficiency; lot and site development; indoor environmental quality; global impact and homeowner education. Points are awarded for each category. To get NAHB certified, a builder needs to get a good score on the test and pass a home inspection.

The Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes— without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach consumers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

Energy Star

Energy Star is a joint program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy since 1992. The Energy Star logo is available to energy-efficient products and practices for labeling.

To be Energy Star certified, a home must meet strict guidelines set by the EPA. Homes are inspected to see if they have good insulation, high performance windows, tight construction and ducts (no drafts), energy efficient cooling and heating systems and Energy Star appliances, lighting and water heaters. Independent third parties conduct the inspections.

LEED

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it is a rating system created by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998.

The LEED rating system focuses on six main areas:

  • sustainable sites
  • water efficiency
  • energy and atmosphere
  • materials and resources
  • indoor environmental quality
  • innovation
  • design process

The purpose of LEED is to create consistent standards regarding the construction of green buildings across the country. Certification is handled by LEED For Home Providers—local organizations chosen by the USGBC to provide third-party verification.

Homebuilders interested in certification must sign up with the LEED For Home Providers group in their area. LEED will provide these builders information on environmentally sound building practices. Once a home is completed, it is inspected and if it meets LEED standards, it can be marketed and sold as LEED-approved – still a distinguishing characteristic when listing a resale property.

If you’re building a home or remodeling an existing one, Stockell Custom Homes can help you learn about green and energy efficient upgrades. We can also help you get your home green certified by one of these organizations – it can have a positive impact on the return you get on your home investment.
