Stockell Custom Homes Builds New ADA-Compliant, Energy Star Residence for Disabled Veteran

Leading St. Louis Builder Donates Labor and Certification Costs for Veteran’s New Home

For owners Jeremiah and Kristy DeGuire of Eureka, Mo., building their dream home included special needs and a concern for the environment. Their new 3,470-square foot home in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood is not only compliant with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) but also Energy Star-certified.

St. Louis builder Stockell Custom Homes & Construction worked with the DeGuires to specially craft a custom home to accommodate Jeremiah DeGuire, a disabled veteran who relies on a wheelchair. The new home includes low thresholds, three-foot wide entries and doors, a step-free main level, elevator, accessible master bath and roll under kitchen counters and cooktop.

Sustainable, energy-efficient construction and indoor air quality were also key elements of the owners’ dream for their home. As a landscape architect and business owner specializing in sustainable design, Kristy DeGuire shares a similar commitment to environmentally friendly construction practices and resources as the Stockell team.

“My business is focused on the idea that great landscapes nourish, restore and connect, so it was very important that we care for the environment in the design and construction of our home,” said Kristy, president of DG2 Design.

Accordingly, the home is equipped with a custom-built, ground source geo-thermal system, fresh water humidifier, high-efficiency air cleaner and specialty electrical, plumbing, caulking and insulation.

Besides providing a more comfortable and healthier living environment, these Energy Star features are also saving the couple an estimated $2,362.00 per year in energy costs and earning them the federal builder tax credit.

As a way of thanking DeGuire for his military service, Stockell Custom Homes covered the cost of the certifications to keep the home on budget. The Stockell team partnered with Welsch Heating & Cooling Company for HVAC and both companies donated a portion of the labor. In addition, the equipment manufacturer, GeoComfort, provided the a significant discount for the family.

“The construction of the DeGuire’s new custom home included a lot of accessible features that will significantly improve Jeremiah’s mobility in his daily life,” said Stockell. “When we needed to stretch the budget to finalize the Energy-Star upgrades and certifications, many talented people stepped up to give something back to this family who has served our country and sacrificed so much. It’s been gratifying to be a part of building this home.”

My husband and I hired Stockell Custom Homes to build our family’s custom energy-efficient and wheelchair-accessible home,” said DeGuire. “Our new home has the latest Energy Star building techniques, is ADA-compliant and on budget. Furthermore, our home achieved one of the lowest HERS (Home Energy Rating System) Index scores in the St. Louis region over the last 10 years. We are grateful and happy that we trusted Stockell to build our new home.”

6 Terms You Need To Know Before Meeting With A Builder

You’re ready to build your dream home. You’ve done your research and you’ve narrowed it down to a handful of builders. As you get ready to meet with prospective builders, its important to know some key terms that you will hear in your consultation.

Terminology. All this builder lingo can get confusing.  Here’s a primer-

Budget is how much a person can afford to spend or how much a person wants to spend on a house.  If you set your budget at $500,000.00 then the total cost to construct the house should not exceed $500,000.00.  At Stockell Homes we can accomplish this for you.

Bid is a fixed price for some specified item to be done.  For instance; we ask a plumber, how much exactly, would it cost to install an Insinkerator, model 33, under my kitchen sink?  Total price to include removing and disposing of the old one. He gives us a fixed price, not to exceed, based on a specified item and task – This is a Bid.  At Stockell Homes we get very accurate whole house bids when selections and clear specifications are made up front.

Estimate is a guess, based on similar finishes, style and square feet.  An experienced builder can look at a picture and a floor plan, and knowing the square feet, guess fairly well – within about 20% or so.  This is based on previous houses they have built.  For example, the last house we built with a similar style and similar finishes cost about $170.00 per square foot.  The plan you have is 2,800 square feet.  So, we estimate the house will cost $476,000.00.

Selections are all the individual components that are used to build and finish your home.  These are owner choices and these choices determine the cost of the home.  The first choice is how big and what style.  4,000 square feet or 2,000 square feet?  French provincial, American Arts & Crafts or other?   Do you want a basement?  9’ or 8’ walls? 2×6 framed walls or 2×4?  8’ ceilings or 10’ ceilings?  Asphalt shingles or slate?  Brick, stone or vinyl siding?  Vinyl or wood windows?  Custom cabinets & granite or stock & Formica?  Etc.   All these selections determine the cost per square foot.

Allowance is a guess about how much an item might cost or how much a group of items might cost.  It is also based on similar houses, with similar finishes.  For instance; if I am talking to a client and we discuss an allowance for cabinets, I might say, the last house we built like yours, the total cost of cabinets was $30,000.  This could be used as an allowance.  It is only a guess, because the new client has not selected the cabinets yet.  The new client might want much nicer cabinets and they may end up costing $45,000.

Allowances are used for cabinets, countertops, flooring, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, siding, etc…

Folks are in a hurry these days and they want to get construction started as soon as possible.  Many builders do not let their clients know, that using allowances creates an “estimated” cost of construction.  It is usually a frustrating ordeal trying to build when decisions have not been made.  It slows things down and creates tension, anxiety and it creates budget concerns, because some of the things they are now selecting are more than the allowance the builder or architect gave them.  At Stockell Home we insure this does not happen to you.  We fully inform our clients of the pitfalls of allowances.  Stockell Homes prefers to use the following best practice.

Best Practice.  The best-case scenario is for the client to take a little time up front and with the guidance of Stockell Homes to actually make some real selections.  We advise our clients on who the best and most competitive vendors are, who to see, addresses & phone numbers.  We suggest that our clients go to the siding company and select the siding, to the cabinet company showroom and select the cabinets they want, to the plumbing supply house and select the tubs, toilets, and faucets, to the flooring center and select the flooring, etc.  All this information is then forwarded to your personal coordinator at Stockell Homes who enters it into selection sheets and then sends the selection sheets along with the plans to the various trades and solicits real bids.  In this way we provide our clients with an accurate cost of construction.   Our clients can upgrade or downgrade different items to stay within the budget.  Once they are content with their final selections and they know the total cost of construction, we move forward toward an enjoyable building experience. It’s comforting to know that everything is selected and ordered and things just hum along.  No surprises!  That’s the Stockell Homes difference.  We have proven systems in place.  We’ve been doing it for years.

St. Louis Remodeling Case Study

St. Louis Remodeler Constructs Two-Story Addition, Lower-Level Refinish for Eureka Family

Transforming your existing house into your dream home can be a daunting process without the right St. Louis remodeling company. This was the case for the Beckerle Family of Eureka, Mo., who hired Stockell Custom Homes & Construction after a less-than-stellar experience with a previous contractor.

The Challenge

When Don and Sherry Beckerle were ready to build an addition on to their home, they knew how critical it was to hire a trustworthy company to complete the construction.

“We had a bad experience with the original contractor who built our home, so it was important to us that we work with a builder we could trust when we decided to remodel,” Sherry said.

The Beckerle’s researched potential builders and St. Louis remodeling companies carefully. Stockell Construction had a good reputation, so the Beckerle’s approached Don Stockell and his team.

“We chose Don and his team because we heard that Stockell Homes does a great job and were dependable,” she said.

The Beckerle’s hired Stockell Homes to construct a large two-story addition, finish the lower level and build a screened-in porch to their home. Stockell also rebuilt the front elevation, replaced the front porch and front door, added dormers to the roof, as well as trim and shutters to all windows.

The Solution: Quality & Integrity

The Beckerles were impressed not only with the quality of work the Stockell Team delivered, but also the staff’s integrity, consistency and open communication.

“It’s evident that Don and his team takes pride in their work. We appreciated how approachable they were whenever we had questions or needed anything. Also, Don was there by 7 a.m. each day to tell us what to expect and go over everything,” Sherry said.

“It was a drastic difference from our other experience where the contractor makes you pull your hair out and makes the experience miserable. With Don, you get what you are promised, complete with professionalism and excellent communication throughout the process,” she said.

Building a Two-Story Addition

“It was a pleasure working with the Beckerles and helping them improve and expand their home,” Don Stockell said. “We received a lot of positive feedback from the Beckerles and their neighbors, especially regarding the two-story addition. We are committed to providing on-time and on-budget construction.”

The two-story structure was built onto the left side of the home. The addition allowed the Beckerles to expand the laundry and mudroom on the first floor, and add an exercise room and larger walk-in closets off the master suite on the second floor.

Bringing Comfort & Relaxation

Stockell Homes transformed the Beckerle’s lower level into the ideal entertainment environment with a home theater, billiards room and custom wet bar.

Another perfect spot for entertaining and relaxation is the Beckerle’s new sun room. The Stockell Team constructed it by adding a screened-in porch to the back of the home, and suggested the placement of a hot tub.

The Result

The Beckerles are pleased with their home’s new look and features.

“Stockell Homes did a great job,” Sherry said. “We’d hire Don again in a heartbeat and have already recommended him to other people. Someone with his integrity and work ethic is hard to come by

You’ll find that “going green” is more affordable today than even a few years ago. This is thanks to advancements in energy-efficient building technology and techniques. Because green home materials and products are more standard, they’re also less expensive and easier to obtain.

Depending on your “shade” of green home, you can benefit from:

  • Increased energy and water efficiency
  • Lower utility bills and other utility company incentives
  • Healthier indoor air quality
  • Tax rebates
  • Lower interest rates on “green” home mortgages
  • Higher resale value

Trending Now: Modern Farmhouse Sliding Barn Door Hardware

Bringing the Barn Door Inside

Whether building a new custom home, remodeling an existing home, or just making a few updates, one design trend we are excited about is sliding barn door style hardware. This look comes in contemporary, industrial, and rustic designs, and can fit beautifully into any kind of decor scheme.

But, are there any real advantages to a sliding door? Yes! Two of the greatest reasons to jump on this trend are for accessibility and saving floor space. A sliding door makes it easier for persons using assistive devices to navigate a space. The sliding door allows them to move straight through an entry. This means no more maneuvering around a classic hinged door, which can be challenging in a tight space like a bathroom. The second reason to consider sliding door hardware is to save valuable floor space in your home. Without the need to allow for the swing space of a traditional hinged door,  you are able to utilize more of your own home.  As a bonus, the clean lines and look of sliding door hardware can give any space a warm but polished feel.

At Stockell Custom Homes, we have been fortunate enough to use the sliding door trend in two projects this summer. We were thrilled to be able to  give two different clients a unique look without sacrificing their own personal style preferences.

What are your thoughts on the sliding barn door trend? Do you think it’s here to stay? We believe it will stand the test of time. The sliding door comes in a vast array of hardware colors and styles and also an abundance of door styles. Besides that, these doors are functional and save space! So, if you’re looking for a fresh way to update your living space, we think that a sliding barn door is the way to go!
